Abstract

The increasing complexity of global civilization has fundamentally transformed the character of legal reality, challenging the adequacy of methodological approaches that have long dominated contemporary discussions on Uṣūl al-Fiqh. While recent scholarship has significantly advanced methodological renewal through maqāṣid al-sharī'ah, contextual interpretation, and systems approaches, limited attention has been devoted to the epistemological foundations underlying Islamic legal reasoning. This article addresses that gap by proposing an epistemological repositioning of Uṣūl al-Fiqh through a conceptual legal research design based on library research and conceptual synthesis. Drawing upon classical Uṣūl al-Fiqh, contemporary Islamic legal theory, legal epistemology, and complexity theory, the study develops The Epistemological Architecture of Uṣūl al-Fiqh (EA-UF) as a conceptual model explaining the dynamic interaction between normative authority, legal rationality, reading of reality, and maqāṣid orientation in the formation of Islamic legal reasoning. Rather than proposing a new methodology of legal derivation, the article argues that the future development of Uṣūl al-Fiqh depends on its capacity to evolve as an epistemological architecture capable of sustaining coherent, adaptive, and normatively legitimate Islamic legal reasoning amid the increasing complexity of global civilization. The article contributes to the development of Islamic Legal Theory by repositioning Uṣūl al-Fiqh as an evolving epistemological framework rather than merely a methodology of istinbāṭ.
