Abstract

Advancements in information technology have brought benefits to society but have also given rise to various social issues, including high rates of online gambling among young people. This situation leads to numerous negative consequences, such as psychological problems, declining academic performance, financial loss, impaired social interactions, and the erosion of moral principles and religious values. This study aims to examine the counseling communication methods employed by religious counselors to prevent online gambling among adolescents in the Medan Timur District. A qualitative approach with a descriptive research design was utilized. Participants included religious counselors, parents, community leaders, and adolescents involved in the guidance program. Data were gathered through observation, in-depth interviews, and document collection, and subsequently analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, involving stages of data collection, data processing, information presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the counseling communication methods prioritized persuasive, dialogic, empathetic, and participatory approaches through direct interaction, whether in individual or group settings. Religious counselors fostered close relationships, used accessible language, offered encouragement, and integrated spiritual values into the counseling process. Success in prevention was also influenced by parental and community participation in providing supervision and guidance, as well as creating a supportive environment for adolescents. This approach proved effective in raising adolescent awareness regarding the risks of online gambling, fostering positive changes in attitudes and behaviors, and strengthening the role of religious counselors in preventing online gambling in the Medan Timur District.
