Abstract

As a prominent philosopher, Al-Ghazali who was born in the Khurasan area, has expertise in divinity, fiqh, and Sufism. His book Ihya Ulum al-Din motivates mankind to achieve happiness in this world and the hereafter. This paper aims to determine the concept of happiness in al-Ghazali's perspective and to find out the method of achieving happiness in al-Ghazali's perspective. The author uses a qualitative approach through the literature study research process. Descriptive analysis method is used in this research. Primary data were obtained from al-Ghazali's work entitled Kimiya al-Saadah, and secondary data were obtained from books, journals, and other writings related to happiness in al-Ghazali's view. This research produces findings: the concept of happiness in al-Ghazali's perspective is when humans have been able to subdue their animal desires. In essence, humans are very weak and despicable creatures in this world. Humans will be of perfect value if they are able to discipline themselves with the path of happiness offered by al-Ghazali. Without happiness, human life will be bad because it is not accompanied by awareness as a creature who depends on the Almighty. Happiness arises from within oneself in the form of an attitude of life, not from outside such as wealth, power, popularity and so on. And the main thing that can invite happiness is something that can arouse love for Allah. While the method offered by al- Ghazali in achieving happiness through his work kimiya al-saadah consists of eight important elements in it, namely first knowing oneself. Second, know God. Third, know the world. Fourth, know the afterlife. Fifth, spiritual in music and dance. Sixth, meditation and remembrance. Seventh, marriage. Eighth, love to Allah swt.
