This article discusses government policies on Islamic education. The focus of the discussion is on how the position of madrasahs is within the framework of regional autonomy, especially in responding to Law Number 22 of 1999 concerning Regional Government and the strategy for developing Islamic education. This study uses literature studies related to government policies related to regional autonomy. the position of madrasahs is a responsibility, namely that they are still managed by the central government at the same time, all other schools have been decentralized in their management. Therefore, madrasahs are a general oddity in the current era of autonomy. The conclusion of this study is that the laws that apply in general still do not pay much attention to the existence of madrasahs, both in educational development policies, budgets and assistance for facilities and infrastructure. especially those related to regional budget allocations that do not consider aspects of rationalizing the education budget with the number of institutions under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Culture and educational institutions under the guidance of the Ministry of Religion, so that there is a need for a review of the law on regional autonomy.
