Abstract

The phenomenon of maladaptive behaviors that continue to emerge in group dynamics, especially in adolescents and individuals with emotional and behavioral problems, suggests the need for counseling interventions that are able to systematically integrate cognitive and behavioral approaches. Cognitive Behavior Modification (CBM) comes as one approach that emphasizes the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and actions, and focuses on cognitive restructuring and changing patterns of dysfunctional behavior. The purpose of this article is to conceptually review the application of CBM in group counseling through literature review from various scientific sources. This research uses the literature review method by examining academic journals, books, and relevant scientific documents within the last ten years. The results show that CBM is effective in the context of group counseling because it allows interventions that are not only individual but also collaborative, increases participants' self-awareness of their thought processes, and strengthens their ability to control emotional and behavioral responses. The conclusion of this article confirms that CBM has great potential to be used as a strategic approach in group counseling, particularly to address psychological problems such as anxiety, aggression, and low self-esteem. Therefore, the integration of CBM in the design of group counseling programs needs to be developed more broadly and applicable in order to make it more effective.
